Technically speaking it’s Charlene. Apparently my biological Father straight up refused to let me have a ‘boys’ name back in 1988, but everyone has always called me Charlie. I prefer it :)

Just through practice. I’ve drawn since I was a kid, as far back as I can remember. I’ve always enjoyed drawing people so I it’s worked out to be an awful lot of practice over the years.

hi charlie! i believe you've said before that you didn't study art at university and are for the most part self-taught, so i was wondering how you ended up at your current job as a concept artist? were you actively looking to go into art full-time? i love your work, you are a huge inspiration to me :)

That’s right, I did go to University but I didn’t study art. I studied Multimedia, mostly because I knew I wanted to go into art but I had no idea what kind of role I wanted, so I just jumped into that course rather than floating around. I grew up wanting to be an animator, but soon realized painting was where it was at for me :)

I taught myself how to paint digitally whilst I was in uni. In fact I spent most of my time painting rather than studying for my course! I kept on painting and then around a year after finishing school I was contacted by the Atomhawk director; my boss. If I hadn’t gotten a job there, I would have carried on painting and applying to other places. I definitely intended to go into art full time.

Unfortunately I have hundreds of messages to sift through. If you’d taken a moment to look through my Tumblr or formspring or DA; you’ll see I’ve answered hundreds of them. So, that ‘famous’ line isn’t washing with me. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to answer every query and critique every piece of art I’m shown. It may surprise people but I’m not a feedback machine and I’m not obligated to be one.

I opening up an Online Mentorship!

I’ve been asked many times before if I’d ever consider mentoring. In the past I’ve always shrugged it off as not being experienced enough, but; after spending the last couple of years working as a Concept Artist and Illustrator 9 to 5, I feel as though I might just have a little knowledge I can share with you guys.

Essentially, I will take you under my wing and allow you to ‘pick my brain.’ I will help you with what it is you want to learn. Read on if you’re interested!

How it works:

Portfolio Review: First things first, we’ll start with a portfolio review. We’ll go over your work and discuss where you’d like to take it. We’ll figure out what your strengths are and discus how to improve your weaknesses.

Tailor Made Lessons: What you learn is up to you. I will provide lessons and live demonstrations based on a variety of subjects. If you wish to focus solely on a particular area however; then the choice is yours. I will tailor the lessons to what it is you want to learn.

Weekly Demos: Each week I will spend a couple of hours doing live demonstrations. I will cover a variety of topics that will help you with your work. You are more than welcome to request topics.

Weekly Paintover & Critique Session: Each week I will review your work and provide a live paintover and feedback session. This will be your opportunity to ask questions! I will provide a critique and we can discuss how the piece can be improved.

Assignments: If you feel as though you will have better results through assignments and deadlines, I can provide those for you.

WHAT TO DO: If you would like to take part in my Online Mentorship program, email me here at charliebowater@hotmail.com

*Provide a link to your portfolio or attach a selection of low-res JPG’s (ten maximum.)

*Please include a brief explanation of what you’d like to get out of the mentorship.

Price
$550 / month.

When does it start?
Applications will be on a rolling basis long term, but some applicants may be able to start immediately. Positions will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

What are the requirements?
Time, a good internet connection and a strong grasp of the English language. We won’t get very far if we don’t understand each other!

How long is the Mentorship?
Mentoring will be on a month to month basis. You can continue the mentorship for as long as you want.
